Website Traffic

When website traffic drops, everybody blames the algorithm.

Google changed something. Facebook throttled reach. The SEO person did something wrong three months ago. It’s a comfortable story, because it means the problem is somebody else’s.

Here’s the less comfortable version. Two of the most common causes of a traffic slide have nothing to do with algorithms and everything to do with your website itself. Slow load times and a bad mobile experience. Neither one announces itself. Nobody emails you to say the site felt sluggish. They just leave, and the numbers go down, and it looks like the algorithm did it.

Nobody tells you your site is slow. They Just Go.

Speed hides best because your own site always feels fast to you. Your browser has it cached. You are on office wifi. You already know where everything is.

Your customer is standing in a parking lot on three bars of cell service, and 53% of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than three seconds. That’s Google’s own number, and it has been stable for years.

It gets worse quickly after that. Going from a one-second load to three seconds raises the odds of a bounce by 32%. Stretch it to ten seconds, and the bounce probability climbs 123%. Akamai‘s research put a price on the same effect: every additional second of delay costs about 7% of your conversions. On the flip side, Portent found B2B sites that load in one second convert about three times better than sites that take five.

You do not need to memorize any of that. You just need to accept the shape of it. Speed is not a technical nicety. It is the first impression, and a slow site makes the impression before a single word of your copy gets read.

The usual culprits are boring, which is good news, because boring problems are fixable. Hero images uploaded straight off a phone camera at 4000 pixels wide. Eleven plugins doing the work of three. Autoplay video on the homepage. A tracking script for a tool you stopped using in 2023. Cheap shared hosting that saves you eight dollars a month and costs you, customers.

Your Website Traffic Is on a Phone Now

Roughly 62% to 64% of web traffic now comes from a phone. That is not a trend to prepare for. That is the current reality, and it means the phone version of your site is not a secondary format. It is the main one.

Google agrees, and it measures. Its Core Web Vitals scores are pass-or-fail benchmarks for how a page actually behaves for real visitors, and mobile is where sites struggle. About 48% of sites pass on mobile compared with 56% on desktop, and the metric that usually sinks them is how long it takes for the main content to appear on screen.

Then there’s the part no score captures. Mobile converts at roughly 1.5% to 2.9% while desktop runs 3.5% to 4.3%. Some of that gap is just how people shop, browsing on a phone and buying on a laptop. Much of it is friction that exists only on a small screen.

You’ve felt every one of these as a customer. The phone number that is an image instead of a tappable link. The “menu” button that hides everything worth clicking. Hours buried three taps deep. A newsletter popup that covers the whole screen with a close button the size of a grain of rice. A contact form with a state dropdown containing all fifty states in a scroll wheel roughly two millimeters tall.

Nobody complains about any of it. They just call the competitor whose number was one tap away.

What to Actually Do About It This Week

Start by running your homepage through Google’s PageSpeed Insights. It’s free, it takes a minute, and it will tell you plainly whether you have a problem and what is causing it. Ignore the desktop score. Read the mobile one.

Then compress your images. On most small business sites, this single fix does more than everything else combined, because the site is usually carrying five or six photos that are ten times larger than they need to be.

Next, do the parking lot test. Turn off wifi on your phone, walk outside in the sunlight, and try to use your own website one-handed. Find your own phone number. Fill out your own contact form. Read your own hours. If any of that annoys you, remember that you already like your business, and your visitor doesn’t yet.

Last, hand your phone to someone who has never seen the site and give them ten seconds to find one specific thing. Watch where their thumb goes. Those ten seconds will tell you more than a month of analytics.

The Bottom Line on Site Speed, Mobile and Website Traffic

You can buy all the ads you want, but if the page takes six seconds to load and the phone number isn’t tappable, you’re paying to send people somewhere that pushes them right back out. Fix the two quiet things first. They’re cheaper than traffic, and they make every dollar of traffic you already buy work harder.
